In today’s reading from the Gospel of Mark, Jesus asks His disciples a question: “But who do you say that I am?”  I believe that this is the most important question that our Lord ever asked in His ministry.  For us, the disciples of Jesus who are now in the world, this is not simply something Jesus asked of His disciples so long ago, it is the most important question for our own lives.  As a Christian, who do you say who Jesus actually is?  And how do you say this in your life–in the way that you live from day to day?

To be sure, we can “say” many things about who Jesus is: He is the Son of God, He is the Lord of all, He is the resurrection and the life, He is the way to eternal life.  But, in this same Gospel reading, Jesus also talks about how we follow Him.  Ultimately, it is what our lives actually look like that says who we think Jesus truly is.  To put it another way, what you do in your life shows whether or not you are telling the truth about yourself when you say “I am a Christian” or “Jesus is the Lord.”

It is simply not enough to say the right things about who Jesus is.  It is what we do with our belief, our Christian faith, that counts the most.

Today, I want to talk about six activities that we must do regularly for our Christian lives–six “building blocks” of our discipleship of Jesus, six ways that we say “who Jesus is.”  These aspects of our faith are how we know we will have strong congregations and how we can provide leadership for the Church that is true to the will of God.

First is our WORSHIP.   It is in worship that we participate in the two most important realities of being a Christian–Holy Baptism and the Holy Communion.  It is also how we engage the sacred Scriptures as the people of God.  Faithful attendance at worship every Sunday is how true Christian life begins, grows and matures.  Worship also teaches us that our Christian faith is not simply a private or individual matter.  Christianity is inherently a communal faith; it is based on being in a community of fellow Christians. Remember that Jesus tells us that when two or three are gathered together in His name, He will be in the midst of them.  Therefore,  worshiping together is our primary means of encountering the risen Lord.

A second building block in our discipleship is DAILY PRAYER.  To put it simply, the Lord Jesus expects that His followers will pray to God.  He gave us what we call the Lord’s Prayer as an example.  Is your prayer life truly “alive?” Do you pray each day?  As children of God, we were created to pray, because prayer is how we nurture our own relationships with God.  And let me tell you something about personal prayer: it should be 90% listening!  I think that when we pray, most of us spend too much time telling God what we want God to know or what we want God to do. Listening for God in our daily prayers creates an “openness,” the kind of environment we need in order for God to break through all of the busyness and clutter of our lives.  I say that personal prayer is just as much about what we receive from God as it is about what we offer to God.  Your personal prayers each day put you in the position to receive what God has for you.

Our STEWARDSHIP comes next.  To offer your time, your talents and your money is how you respond to the Christian growth you experience in worship and prayer.  And the simple truth is that the more you are committed to Jesus and to His Church, the more you are willing to offer.  Remember that Jesus concluded that “where your treasure is there will your heart be also.”  That truth can make many of us uncomfortable, but I suggest that if we are uncomfortable with this it is because we know that we are not giving the time, talent, and money that we could and should give.  As today’s Gospel reading tells us, self-denial is an essential part of our discipleship and so our stewardship will require self-denial–not “might” involve self-denial it or will “probably” mean self-denial, but will require it for the sake of God’s purposes in this life.  Ask yourself, does your stewardship involve any self-denial?  How?  The most measurable aspect of personal stewardship is the offering of money to the Church and to charities that help those in need.  The scriptural standard and expectation for our giving is 10% of our yearly income.  We must always remember that we give so that ministry can happen. Therefore, please understand that giving is very much a theological matter, and not simply a way to take care of practical necessities in the Church’s life.  Jesus Himself spoke and taught about our wealth and our giving more than any other single topic because He knows that few realities reveal our personal commitment to God more than what we do with our money.  And the best news is that our stewardship can be one of the very greatest sources of Christian joy and fulfillment.  I know this in my own life and I pray it is for you, also.

Another essential part of our discipleship of Jesus is CHRISTIAN EDUCATION. This is not only our responsibility, it is also the most important measure of how we mature in our life of faith.  It is also great fun!  To learn and to reason are among the highest callings of human activity and therefore are great gifts to God.  The use of knowledge and reason is one of the primary ways that the Holy Spirit moves and brings meaning in Christian life.  Therefore, Christian education is something we seek throughout all of our lives.  To follow Jesus means always to seek knowledge and understanding of the ways of God.  This is not about “how much we know” but, rather, it is about nothing less than our spiritual formation and how we grow into the fulness of faith.

EVANGELISM is the natural result of that growth, fulfillment and joy we find in worship, prayer, stewardship, and Christian education.  In my experience, most people are somewhat uncomfortable with evangelism.  Perhaps this is because we have seen how it can be misused.  Or, possibly, we are shy about evangelism because we think we don’t know “how to do it.”  But the truth is that the best way to be an evangelist is simply to be yourself in your faith.  This means that we are all unique evangelists.  Simply share your experience, your fulfilment, your peace, your hope, your confidence, your joy with others as only you can share those experiences.  Our Lord Jesus has commanded us to be evangelists and the Church is counting on each and every one of us. We all know that people everywhere need us to share what we have found through faith.  In one way or another they are looking for the reality of God in this life.  I can assure you that there is no greater joy, no deeper fulfillment than to bring a person to Jesus Christ and see what happens then!

Finally, though surely not least, is our OUTREACH, our ministries of service to those who are not part of our congregations.  I use this as the last of the six “building blocks” of Christian discipleship because outreach is like a pinnacle in the life of faith.  William Temple, former Archbishop of Canterbury, observed that the Church is the only organization that exists for those who are not its members.  Quite simply, the best way to imitate Jesus is to serve the needs of the world:  people who are poor, lonely, sick, or in despair.  When the Church does this, ministering consistently and well, we are truly being the Body of Christ on Earth.

Our highest calling, actually our only purpose, is for people to experience the life, witness and ministry of the Church and then to know what Jesus is like–no, more than that–to be able to answer for themselves that question put by Jesus “Who do you say that I am?”
